TCP vs UDP

Networking· 30 August 2026· 1 min read

1. TCP vs UDP

  • TCP: Reliable, connection-oriented → makes sure data arrives correctly and in order.
  • UDP: Fast, connectionless → sends data without establishing a connection or guaranteeing delivery.

2. Handshake

  • TCP uses a 3-way handshake: SYN → SYN-ACK → ACK to establish a connection between client and server.
  • UDP has no handshake — it can start sending data immediately.

3. Congestion Control

  • TCP continuously monitors the network and adjusts how much data it sends to avoid overwhelming the network.
  • UDP generally doesn't perform TCP-style congestion control, so applications using UDP must handle traffic control themselves if needed.
